We learned late last year that Samsung is planning to keep its operating margins high by slashing its labor costs by building a new $3.2 billion factory in Vietnam that will deliver even cheaper labor. However, it looks like the new factory is already experiencing problems before it even opens: Agence France-Presse, via NDTV, reports that a riot broke out at the new factory after guards started beating a construction worker who arrived late to the job. From there, AFP says that “hundreds of other workers then hurled bricks and rocks at the guards before setting fire to containers being used as offices and dozens of motorbikes.” Samsung vowed to investigate the matter, although it downplayed the reported riot as “a brief altercation” that hadn’t affected the construction of the facility.
