S60 Webkit-based Browser Isn’t Going Anywhere

Regarding recent rumors that Nokia may be ditching the current Webkit-based browser found on S60 devices, Peter Harbeson of S60 clears the air:

OK, (ouch) everybody out there (bonk) in the blogosphere just (oof) take a deep (splat) breath! We are not backing away from Webkit no matter what you might have read on one of those new-fangled “website” things…

Harbeson goes on to explain that the focus of the browser team has shifted as of late. S60’s labors with regards to the Tiger branch of the Webkit project have laid idle while attention was turned toward the newer Leopard branch. Development related to Nokia’s recent acquisition of Trolltech is also cited as one of several projects requiring attention from the browser team. Long story short, they’re just busy. So there you have it: Webkit it is.
