Finnish equity research firm Inderes said Wednesday that Nokia is estimated to have shipped between 3.5 million and 4 million N8 smartphones to date. The Nokia N8, which launched late in the third quarter of 2010, was the first Nokia smartphone to feature the Symbian^3 operating system — which has since been renamed simply to “Symbian.” Ahead of the N8 launch, Nokia stated that it had “received a record number of online pre-orders for the Nokia N8.” Nokia did not provide any figures to substantiate its claim at that point in time, and it has not reported any sales figures since the launch of the N8. Inderes’ sales estimates, which are based on channel checks and other data, suggest that the N8 has been quite popular in several markets such as India, Finland and Malaysia. While estimated N8 sales fall short of popular devices like the iPhone 4 and Samsung’s Galaxy S, Inderes’ figures are very promising for the struggling Finnish cell phone maker.
