The European Commission on Tuesday revealed its plans to launch an investigation into Microsoft’s failure to comply with a 2009 browser choice ruling. The Commission believes the Redmond-based company may have failed to display an option to Windows 7 users in Europe that offered alternatives to the company’s Internet Explorer Web browser. Microsoft indicated in its annual compliance report to the Commission in December 2011, however, that it was in compliance with the ruling. The software giant has since acknowledged that the browser option screen was not displayed on roughly 28 million PCs running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 due to a “technical error.” Microsoft has taken “immediate steps” to fix the problem and offered to extend its compliance period related to the initial ruling.
