Google’s latest mobile search change brings some key interface changes

Where would we be without Google Search? We have written a number of times about how important Google and its industry-leading search engine is — for a good example, see our article titled “The truth about Google and evil.” Google has launched and will continue to launch a number of important products with impact that reaches far beyond profits and revenue, but Search stands out because of the role it played in breaking down the barriers between people and information.

As good as Google Search is, however, Google is constantly looking for ways to improve its search engine and its interfaces, and the company’s latest big change brings some great improvements to mobile search.

Google on Thursday evening announced some nice changes to the results pages when people perform searches on mobile devices.

For some time now, Google has been displaying a “Google box” at the top of search results that highlights what Google believes to be the best results for your search, or the best answer to your question. Now, the Google box will also display a carousel of news results that can be scrolled sideways to see the latest news on whatever topic you searched.

Here’s an animated GIF that shows how the new carousel works on a smartphone:

“When you search for a topic, just scroll down to see a ‘carousel’ of recent articles, videos or more on that subject,” Google Search product manager Ardan Arac wrote in a blog post. Tap any link to read or watch exactly what you’re interested in. For example, if you search for NPR, you’ll see links to all their latest articles and videos. Search for the Knicks to browse content from their site as well as videos and news from ESPN or Bleacher Report. (If you don’t see this new feature yet when you search for your favorite site, stay tuned—we’ll be making this available for more sites soon.)”

The changes have already begun rolling out.
