Facebook’s mobile app is notorious for draining your battery and consuming tons of data every month. Because of this, the company has come up with a new app called Facebook Lite that will deliver the essentials of the Facebook experience while significantly reducing the amount of power and data it consumes compared to the regular Facebook app.

“Facebook Lite is less than 1MB so it is fast to install and quick to load,” Facebook explains. “It includes Facebook’s core experiences like News Feed, status updates, photos, notifications and more.”
There is, of course, a catch here: Facebook says that for now the app is rolling out in countries across Asia and will be available in the coming weeks “in parts of Latin America, Africa and Europe.” There’s no word yet on North American availability yet, but this is an app that would be very welcome for Facebook users in the United States.
Antivirus software firm AVG regularly ranks the worst mobile apps for your phone’s battery and its overall performance, and Facebook is always one of the worst offenders. What makes these sorts of issues particularly egregious is that you really don’t need to use Facebook’s app to get a solid experience with Facebook on your phone. Instead, you can do just fine with most functions by accessing Facebook through your phone’s mobile browser, which won’t clog up your storage, eat through your monthly data limits or drain your phone’s battery.
