Many of us who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s probably got our first horror movie scares from Wes Craven, the legendary writer and director of A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream. Deadline brings us word that Craven passed away on Sunday at the age of 76 after a battle with brain cancer.

“I am heartbroken at the news of Wes Craven’s passing,” said executive producer Bob Weinstein, who regularly collaborated with Craven. “We enjoyed a 20-year professional relationship and more importantly a warm and close friendship. He was a consummate filmmaker and his body of work will live on forever. My brother and I are eternally grateful for all his collaborations with us. Our deepest sympathy to his family.”
Although Craven is best known for his horror films, he also tried to branch out into other genres in the thriller Red Eye and the drama Music of the Heart.
