Chromecast off to a great start in Europe

Chromecast International Launch Sales

Shortly after Google launched its Chromecast dongle in various international markets, a report says the device is quite popular in Europe, singling out U.K. and Norway as top markets for the device. GigaOm says that Curry sold a Chromecast every 4.5 seconds on launch day in the U.K. Some stores sold out the allotted stock on launch day, with one representative calling it “one of the most successful launch days, both online and in-store, in recent years,” comparable with an iPad launch – however, the Chromecast is a significantly more affordable purchase option for consumers.

Norway’s Elkjøp retail chain also confirmed strong Chromecast sales, ordering a second batch of 40,000 units to meet up demand, described by a spokesperson as “second to none.”

Google, meanwhile, has not announced any sales numbers for the Chromecast since the device was introduced last year. The company identified the dongle as one of its best selling hardware products last year, and recently said it sold millions of devices in the U.S. “We’ve sold millions of Chromecast to date, and we hope to replicate that success in Europe,” Google told GigaOm when asked about European sales performance so far.

The Chromecast was launched in 11 additional markets two weeks ago.
