We spend tons of time here on BGR covering apps. We tell you when nifty paid iPhone apps go on sale for free, we share lists of the best Android apps in the world, and we cover cool new individual apps that are worth checking out. There’s a reason we spend so much time here on BGR discussing apps: Each new app you install on your smartphone or tablet instantly transforms your device and extends its capabilities in one or more directions that are limitless.

Of course, we also tip our collective hat when another site assembles a great list of apps, and this latest offering might be one of the best we have seen all year.

MacStories editor-in-chief Federico Viticci is one of the most respected names out there when it comes to news sites focused on Apple, and his opinions are always appreciated by Apple fans. It stands to reason, then, that we should all take note when he publishes his annual lists of must-have iPhone and iPad apps.

Where the iPhone is concerned, Viticci recently published an in-depth look at 50 must-have iPhone apps that he found to be the cream of the crop in 2014.

The extensive list of apps is split into seven different categories including Work Essentials, Social, Audio and Music, Photos and Screenshots, News, Health and Utilities.

On the list, you’ll find many great apps that are probably already essentials on your iPhone, like Dropbox, Evernote, Twitter, WhatsApp and Facebook’s Paper app. You might also find some great apps that you’ve never heard of before, such as Metapho, Screeny, Nuzzel and PCalc.

Viticci also goes through each app and explains exactly how he uses it and what makes it so great. His full list is linked below in our source section, and we highly recommend checking it out.
