Following more than a year of rumors suggesting Apple (AAPL) is working to develop an own-brand television, The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday reported that the company is indeed testing a number of designs with manufacturing partners. Citing information from multiple unnamed sources working for Apple’s suppliers, WSJ reports that Apple is testing several HDTV designs with Asian partners including Hon Hai and Sharp but the device is not close to release, as earlier reports had suggested. “It isn’t a formal project yet. It is still in the early stage of testing,” one of the paper’s sources said. Apple is said to be working with Sharp to design the TV, and Sharp is also rumored to be supplying display panels for the device.
