Google announced on Monday that update 1.1 is now available for the unlocked Android developer phone (ADP1). The update contains several bug fixes for issues involving the alarm clock, device sleep, POP3 email and email notification. The update also adds new features to the ADP1 including business reviews in maps, the ability to save MMS attachments and support for voice search. Developers will also be somewhat pleased to know that Google has toned down its stance on access to the Android Market while still ensuring developer applications are protected. Rather than blocking access to the entire contents of the paid Android Market, Google will only block those applications, free or paid, that are distributed with copy protection. Google argues that the ADP1, unlike the consumer G1, has unrestricted access to the device’s contents, making it easy for ADP1 owners to potentially copy and distribute downloaded applications, including those with copy protection. Since Google is not able to enforce copy protection on the ADP1, all applications distributed with copy protection will not be accessible to the ADP1. Consider this decision a partial win for Android developers everywhere.
