Apple will reportedly update its iMac line next week, French publication MacGeneration has learned, although the new iMac models won’t feature Retina displays. Instead, the new iMacs said to be coming next week will receive a processor bump and possibly new Thunderbolt 2 ports. The news apparently comes from the same source who accurately predicted the launch of new MacBook Airs.
Earlier this year, Apple released a similar MacBook Air refresh, with the 2014 models receiving faster and more energy-efficient processors, and cheaper prices across the line.
The new iMacs will receive a processor speed bump of 100MHz across configurations, with MacRumors saying Apple will use Intel’s recently launched processors, including the “3.3 GHZ i5-4690, the 3.5 GHz i5-4690, and 3.6 GHz i7-4790 for the 27-inch model as well as the 3.0 GHz i5-4590S and 3.2 GHz i5-4790S for the 21.5-inch model.”
Earlier this year, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his accurate Apple-related predictions, said a cheaper iMac is on track to launch this year.
However, it’s not clear at this time whether the new iMacs will be cheaper than their predecessors. One MacGeneration reader who purchased a new iMac 27 model and who was expected to receive it on June 12 revealed that his order has been postponed to June 18, but a change in price was not mentioned.
Code discovered in OS X Yosemite revealed that Apple may launch Retina iMacs later this year, although it’s not clear when that will happen.
