A handful of key features always bubble up to the top of surveys that ask consumers to name the most important things they consider when buying a news smartphone. Battery life is often among them, for example, as are the brand and platform. A phone’s camera performance is at or near the top of the list in every noteworthy survey, and now it’s time to take a look at how the cameras compare on the top three flagship smartphones in the world: Samsung’s Galaxy S6, HTC’s new One M9 and Apple’s iPhone 6.

We’ve seen dozens of camera comparisons published since Samsung and HTC announced their new flagship smartphones, and some have been better than others. A couple different showdowns have even been covered here on BGR.

No camera comparison test you see on a gadget blog or news website will ever be flawless, but most comparison tests we’ve seen at this point have been pretty bad. Photos are often taken at different angles, and many wait too long between outdoor shots, which can render the results useless as clouds move and lighting changes.

This past weekend, however, we came across a camera showdown that is easily the best we’ve seen so far.

Published last week by CNET, the comparison pits the Galaxy S6, HTC One M9 and iPhone 6 cameras against each other in a wide range of scenes. They’re all scenarios where users might take photos in real life, and all images are taken from the same angle at about the same time.

Finally, most camera comparisons we have seen have wishy-washy conclusions that fail to declare an actual winner. This one, however, conclusively states that the Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6 cameras outperform the One M9, and it gives a narrow edge to one of those two phones, thus crowning a king of smartphones when it comes to camera performance.

Which flagship phone took the prize? No spoilers here — you’ll have to follow the link below in our source section to find out.
