Don’t dunk the OnePlus One in water, no matter what you see on YouTube

The OnePlus One has taken on a mythical quality, mostly due to the fact that it’s almost impossible to buy, but there are some very real limits to its perceived powers. Android Police has noticed that there’s a new video making its rounds on YouTube that shows the OnePlus One being dunked into a few centimeters of water and held there for a little more than 10 seconds before being pulled out completely unscathed. Although this video, which now has more than 50,000 views, seems to suggest that the OnePlus One is waterproof, the reality is that it’s not.

Android Police smartly reached out to the team at OnePlus to clarify whether their flagship phone is waterproof and they responded that “the OnePlus One is not endorsed as a water resistant product and water damage will not be covered by warranty.” This means that the person who dunked their OnePlus One in water simply got lucky and that anyone who’s lucky enough to own the device shouldn’t even think of plunging it into water.

Just because the OnePlus One isn’t waterproof, though, that doesn’t mean there aren’t phones out there that aren’t hugely resistant to water. Both the Xperia Z2 and the Galaxy S5, for instance, have shown themselves to be extremely resistant to water damage. We’ve even seen torture tests that show the Galaxy S5 surviving being run through a full wash cycle, which is by far the most impressive showing we’ve yet seen from a smartphone.
