After some recent posts concerning many difficulties that Mowser has been having of late, Co-founder Russell Beattie announced yesterday that the service would be closing its doors. Mowser, while a fantastic service that certainly has a place in the mobile world, had trouble locating funding and was forced to shut down. For those unfamiliar with it, Mowser is / was a web portal that converted full web pages into low-end mobile browser-friendly pages. Google provides a similar service, but Mowser was often the preference for those who knew of it. Therein lies the problem, however. Lack of exposure to the wider potential customer base of low-level users resulted in a lack of interest from potential investors. It’s a vicious cycle that start ups often face unfortunately. We still think that there’s a market for products like Mowser, but the fact of the matter is that the only way to reach said market is by way of a carrier agreement or similar. The mobile web might be fading, but it’s not dead quite yet. Truly a shame that Beattie and the rest of the very talented team behind Mowser didn’t see more success with their product. Best of luck guys, we’re rooting for you.
