With the rapidly decreasing cost of flash memory, the format is becoming more accessible to hardware manufacturers looking for fast storage. The latest to step up to the plate is Intel. The company has pledged to begin offering flash memory with their hardware server products beginning in 2008. It’s no secret that flash memory is much faster than traditional hard drive based systems, with flash drives able to perform up to 50 times more transactions per second. The problem, however, is that at least until recently, the format has been prohibitively expensive. Thanks to recent strides in manufacturing efficiency, as well as an increasing number of big companies adopting the standard, flash prices have begun to drop, which is good news for the consumer. Intel will begin with a 32 GB option, and plans to increase capacity to 64GB to 128 GB over time. Bring it awn!
