Google (GOOG) has now joined AT&T (T) and General Electric in the illustrious ranks of America’s top lobbyists. Per AllThingsD, Google this week said it spent $4.18 million on lobbying expenses in the third quarter of 2012, bringing its total lobbying expenses on the year to a company-record $13.13 million. According to OpenSecrets.org, this makes Google the seventh-biggest lobbyist in the United States, by far the highest for a technology company. As AllThingsD notes, Google spent the most money this year in the first quarter, when it shelled out “$5.03 million on efforts like defeating the SOPA anti-piracy legislation.”
