A Microsoft engineer on Tuesday identified a new international spam botnet that can access Yahoo! Mail accounts on Android devices. Terry Zink noted on a Microsoft blog that various spam emails included the signature, “Sent from Yahoo! Mail on Android.” The engineer then traced the IP addresses of the emails to various developing countries, such as Chile, Indonesia, Lebanon, Oman, Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Ukraine and Venezuela. “I am betting that the users of those phones downloaded some malicious Android app in order to avoid paying for a legitimate version and they got more than they bargained for,” Zink said. “Either that or they acquired a rogue Yahoo Mail app.” Android has been targeted before, with some reports claiming more than $1 million was stolen from Android users in 2011 through malicious attacks.
