Windows Phone 8 brings fragmentation to Microsoft’s mobile platform

Microsoft has joined the ranks of Google and Apple in bringing fragmentation to its Windows Phone platform. The software giant revealed during its Windows Phone Summit on Wednesday that no current Windows smartphone, including the newly released Lumia 900, will be eligible to upgrade to the latest operating system. Current Windows Phone owners will not be able to experience the new customization options, integrated Voice over IP, Nokia Maps or Microsoft’s Wallet hub, without purchasing a new handset this fall. The decision was likely a difficult one for Microsoft that has obvious negative implications for current Windows Phone users, but rebuilding the platform using the Windows 8 kernel creates a core link between the company’s desktop and mobile platforms that will bring huge benefits for users and developers alike moving forward.
