Ahead of the holidays last year, AT&T unveiled new smartphone plans that finally offered subscribers what many people have been seeking for years: a discount on phone service once the device subsidy is paid for. Traditional cell phone service plans include an additional fee built in to help carriers recoup the cost of the phones they sell, which are made available to customers at a discounted price up front. The rest of the phone’s value is worked into the monthly cost of service.

Now, just as AT&T did this past December, Verizon on Monday announced a new promotion that will offer users a similar deal.

“Starting this Thursday, existing customers who are on month-to-month contracts can move to a MORE Everything plan to experience savings immediately,” Verizon said in a post on its blog. “Customers who choose plans with data allowances of 8 GB or below can add a smartphone for $30, a savings of $10, and customers who choose plans with data allowances of 10 GB and above can add a smartphone for $15, a savings of $25.”

The post continued, “Also available on April 17, new customers who want to experience the nation’s largest and most reliable network can add any smartphone they already own to a MORE Everything plan for either $30 or $15 depending on the data allowance they choose. When a customer brings his or her own smartphone, it must be compatible with the Verizon Wireless network.”

All of the company’s More Everything plans include unlimited voice calls and messages, and then the user can choose from various available monthly data allotments.

Verizon said that the new lower plan prices will also apply to customers on Verizon’s Edge program, which offers early upgrades to users who pay an additional monthly fee and trade in their current handset.

The carrier said that this new deal is available for a limited time, though it did not indicate when the promotion will end.
