We may be getting a clearer answer to age-old question of, “Who’s to blame for Android fragmentation?” DroidLife reports that Verizon’s (VZ) version of the Samsung (005930) Galaxy Nexus is still three updates behind other Nexus devices. The delays in getting the Galaxy Nexus new software are somewhat surprising since the device is part of Google’s (GOOG) Nexus series that runs “pure Android” without any additional manufacturer software, so approval for updates should theoretically be a breeze. But as DroidLife notes, it seems that “the carrier approval process when it comes to updates is about as broken as it gets” and is one reason why Google was reluctant to tie its new Nexus 4 smartphone to any of the three biggest American carriers.
Verizon still hasn’t given the Galaxy Nexus any of the last three Android updates
