When it comes to TVs, resolutions, and pixels, the larger the number, the better, right? Come September, Toshiba will roll out an HD-DVD firmware update that actually scales back its frame rate to 24 frames per second, or that of real on-film cinematic adventures. By comparison, TVs and playback devices in the States are typically 30fps, and home movies are essentially sped up and filler frames are added to compensate. With this new update, there’s no 3:2 pulldown conversion, and the results are a cleaner and better quality playback. Major downside? Most current TVs aren’t capable of 24fps, so it would take a new set just to enjoy the update.
