Microsoft may issue smaller Windows tweaks, eliminate giant time-sucking upgrades

Mary Jo Foley has been hearing rumblings that Microsoft (MSFT) is rethinking its traditional strategy of walloping users with giant software upgrades and is instead “attempting to move toward something more like what Apple (AAPL) does, with point releases.” Foley writes that this new strategy could manifest itself as early as next year when Microsoft releases a post-Windows 8 software update currently codenamed “Windows Blue” that Foley speculates is either “a service pack” that “is a rollup of fixes and updates,” or “a feature pack” that could “include be a rollup of fixes plus some new features.” Either way, Foley doesn’t expect the release to be anything close to a “Windows 9” as has been reported, but more along the lines of a “Windows 8.1.”
