Friday was a sad day for Trekkies and fans of science fiction in general as Leonard Nimoy, the actor best known for his role as Mr. Spock in Star Trek, passed away at the age of 83. As news of his passing spread, tributes to Nimoy came pouring in, from both his fellow Star Trek actors and from those whom he inspired. Nimoy’s longtime Star Trek costar William Shatner posted a message on Twitter that read, “I loved him like a brother. We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love.”

— William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) February 27, 2015Fellow original Trek cast member George Takei, who has created a second major career for himself as a hugely popular social media personality, posted a touching tribute on his Facebook page in which he called Nimoy “a great friend” who would now “return to the stars.”
Entertainment Weekly has posted a recent interview it conducted with actor Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the rebooted Star Trek movie franchise and who acted alongside Nimoy in the franchise’s first film. In the interview, Quinto says that he forged a “powerful friendship” while working with Nimoy and says that “I love him, his wife. They’re like family to me, 100 percent. Like second parents, for sure.”
NASA, which itself is trying to help humanity boldly go where no man has gone before, sent out a tweet in which it said that so many of its engineers and scientists have been inspired by Nimoy. It also posted a picture of Nimoy visiting NASA in 1976.

And of course, Nimoy had a terrific sense of humor and wasn’t afraid to be silly, as you’ll see in the video embedded below.
RIP, Leonard Nimoy. We’re happy that you lived long and prospered for as long as you did.
