Google kicked off a big developer’s conference on Wednesday for Project Ara, its experimental smartphone project that could allow for the creation of fully modular phones. Droid Life notes that as part of its opening keynote on Wednesday, Google “unveiled a massive gallery of the updated Ara skeleton with modules and other customizations to show the potential as we get closer to availability.” Below you’ll find a few of these new pictures showing off Google’s crazy experimental smartphone.

As you can see in this photo, Google is working on both a large version of the device and a significantly smaller one. It’s particularly interesting to see how Google has similarly sized modules on both devices, although the larger phone features big square-shaped modules that won’t fit on the smaller version.

This picture, meanwhile, shows what the phones will look like with one module removed, as well as what the modules will look like if you flip them upside down.

And finally, this picture shows some of the potential fun combinations of colors, pictures and patterns you can include on each module to make your phone truly customized.

Droid Life has a ton more pictures from the big Project Ara event and we highly recommend checking them all out by clicking the source link below.
