Flappy Bird might have been the biggest mobile game of all time, causing a craze like no other game before it, nor since. However, the game was pulled from the Apple App Store and Google Play after the founder became concerned it was too addictive. Now, it looks like the game is back.
In a press release this morning, Amazon said Flappy Birds Family is available on Amazon Fire TV and is compatible with both regular controllers and the Fire TV remote, making it the first platform Flappy Bird has returned to. The latest version of the game allows gamers to compete against other gamers, and offers new controls and features that weren’t available in the iOS and Android versions of the game, which were released in May 2013.
Both the iOS and Android app were incredibly successful, topping the iOS app chart and being downloaded more than 50 million times on Android. The game, which closely resembled the Nintendo Mario games, had a bird go through green pipes, but was ultimately pulled. This came after the creator, Dong Nguyen, tweeted that he couldn’t take it anymore and needed to pull the game down. Following the tweet, Nguyen received death threats. There was also speculation that since the game looked a lot like Mario Bros., that Nintendo forced him to pull the game down, but Nguyen tweeted it was not a legal issue.
In May, Nguyen sparked hopes of a new Flappy Birds game, when he tweeted that he would be making a new game, “So people can forget about Flappy Bird for a while.”
It’s unclear whether Flappy Birds Family will move to other platforms such as iOS or Android.
