James Dolan has a vision for the future of the cable industry and it may not include pay TV. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, the Cablevision CEO said that “there could come a day” when his company doesn’t offer a separate television service and instead delivers everything over its cable Internet service.  Dolan said that whenever he watches television with his children, they typically watch content on Netflix through Cablevision’s broadband service rather than through its television service. Dolan also said that the cable industry is living in a “bubble” right now if it thinks that viewers will continue paying high prices for bundles of channels that they never watch. It will be interesting to see whether Dolan’s comments result in more flexible plans that give consumers cheaper cable plans with fewer bundled channels.
