AT&T (T) is planning to shut down its second-generation wireless network by 2017, the company said in an SEC filing on Friday. The nation’s second largest carrier revealed that only 12% of its current subscribers were using a 2G-only device at the end of June and the company plans to “proactively” coax current 2G users into upgrading to more advanced smartphones. While a majority of AT&T’s subscribers are on the carrier’s 3G network, the carrier expects most users to migrate to LTE in the near future due to its aggressive rollout of its 4G technology.
