Residents in Austin, Texas can sign up to get Google Fiber in their neighborhoods right now. And to convince Austinians that getting Fiber is in their best interests, the company has put out a new promotional video showing them all the ways Google’s 1Gbps service will change their lives for the better.

Among other things, the video shows a teacher in a classroom showing her class immersive 3D images of Mars, a musician playing jamming with a friend on their guitars over the Internet via a live video hookup and a grandmother talking with her grandchildren over live video chat.
Of course, you won’t need Google Fiber to do things like live video chats but having a 1Gbps pipe will certainly mean a lot more data can pass over the network a lot more quickly, which means a huge drop in jitter, lag and other problems that plague your average video chat experience.
So far, Google has committed to bringing Google Fiber to three markets in the United States: Kansas City, Austin, Texas and Provo, Utah. The company has also been contemplating expanding Fiber to as many as nine new major metropolitan areas: Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, Phoenix, Portland, Raleigh-Durham, San Antonio, Salt Lake City, and San Jose. All nine of these metropolitan areas met their deadlines to submit paperwork to Google and have been anxiously awaiting to hear what their next steps should be.
