Samsung is apparently already working on Android tablets with 4K resolution, TechRadar reveals, after having seen one such prototype in France during an LTE broadcast demonstration at the French Open at Roland Garros. The device used is apparently a “reference device for operators to perform tests with,” although the tablet came with clear Samsung branding and design, including Samsung’s “physical home key below the 12-inch UltraHD display.” From the looks of it, the tablet seems similar to Samsung’s current 12.2-inch Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 and Tab Pro 12.2 models.
This 12.2-inch tablet version apparently packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, although other hardware details for the device were not mentioned. The publication hopes that the consumer version of the tablet would launch with a more powerful Snapdragon 805 processor, “which comes with many added 4K benefits including video upscaling to make 720p and 1080p clips look much better and a new video format (HEVC) which is less bandwidth heavy.”
Qualcomm’s Senior vice president of Product Management Raj Tailuri told TechRadar during the company’s event in Paris that 4K tablets will be launched by the end of the year, without specifying what Android makers may already be working on such models.
What’s clear so far is that Samsung will launch a new high-end family of tablets, the Galaxy Tab S line, set to be unveiled on June 12th during a special media event in New York.
