Samsung (005930) late last week alleged that jurors in the Apple (AAPL) patent case had improperly relied upon outside information not presented during the trial, thus invalidating the jury’s $1 billion verdict and necessitating a new trial. CNET reports that Samsung’s allegations revolve around jury foreman Velvin Hogan, who said in interviews after the trial that he had used his expertise in patents to guide his fellow jurors’ decisions on what constituted prior art in intellectual property cases. Hogan had been instructed before the trial to make decisions based solely on the law as instructed “and not based on your understanding of the law based on your own cases.”
