As BlackBerry continues to fight for its life, the company announced late last month that it will eliminate about 4,500 jobs in an effort to reduce expenses by 50%. According to a new report, the job cuts have now begun with about 300 having been laid off in Waterloo this week. The cuts will be spread out between now and the end of the first quarter in fiscal 2015, but the company confirmed on Wednesday that the process is now underway. “We are in a period of transition and we must focus on enhancing our financial results to be in a better position to compete in this current mobile environment,” BlackBerry said in a statement to The Globe and Mail. “We recognize our local employees’ hard work on behalf of our company and the difficulty of this news.” As the report notes, BlackBerry will have slashed approximately 7,000 jobs since 2011 once this new round of layoffs is complete.
