Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past couple of weeks, you’ve no doubt read about the recent resurgence in US-carrier unlimited cellular plans. All of the big boys have jumped onboard in one way or another, and just about all of the options are in the same ballpark. Unlimited voice starts at $100 and additional services can be added for additional fees. Rumors that Sprint will drop their starting price point down to $60 when its plan goes national are still just rumors, so they come in at $100 as well in the few markets where their plan is currently available. There is currently one US carrier offering significantly better unlimited options though, with unlimited plans starting at… $25! WTF? Alaska DigiTel, a local Alaskan CDMA carrier, has in fact been offering great unlimited plans since 2003. Less than 0.25% of America’s population calls Alaska home, but those 700,000 part-time insomniacs have some damn good wireless plans available to them:
- $79.99 National Unlimited calling
- $69.99 Unlimited local and long distance calling, picture and text messaging
- $49.99 Local Unlimited calling
- $24.95 Local Shared Unlimited calling
Alaska DigiTel has been around since 1999 and has its eyes on growth now more than ever. DigiTel took a sizable investment last year from General Communications Inc, now DigiTel’s majority equity-holder. They still seem a bit ‘mom and pop’ though; in fact COO Jeffrey Roe is listed as the PR contact on Friday’s press release addressing unlimited in wireless. Hey, whatever works…
