HTC's UI for Windows Phone 7 seen on video?

General

Blog Mobility Digest has, what appears to be, a video of the Windows Phone 7 UI that HTC will be using on WP7 device (we’re not sure if it will still be called Sense or not). The quick 2-minute video showcases the notes, weather, and stock widgets, as well as a fairly useless — albeit kind of cute — flower pedal widget. TheĀ refinementsĀ made look really, really nice… let’s hope they actually make it onto WP7 HTC devices. The video is waiting for you after the break.

Hear that sound? That’s the sound of the BB falling even further behind the pack.

Right, because sitting through animations whenever you want to do *anything* on the computer/mobile never gets old.

+1. Battery juice is nice too.

Guess you never saw their quarterly reports today. Revenue, Profits and Handset sold, all record highs.

Android will most likely become the #1 OS, but RIM will be #2, will iOS falling behind as iPhone offers absolutely nothing better than Android, and RIM still owns the corporate market, as well as the market for people who actually want to communicate and not have a toy.

      • Wobbly

Remember all the OS’s you’ve listed first have to surpass Symbian in market share. It’ll also be interesting to see how Nokia transitions from Symbian to Meego, and what effect that will have on market share.

This is great and all, but until HTC Sense on WP7 is optimized with VZW software it’s complete crap. We made DROID OS so much better that other companies don’t even have DROIDs. No one can compete with VZW OR DROID!

    • J

Your so arrogant…. All these Verizon fan boys are obsessed with DROID , DROID , DROID.

Do you EVEN realize that DROID = BRAND NAME, made by Verizon to lure people like you to buy it?

DROID = Phone + Android OS + Verizon Brand Name

From what you are saying I can also say, T-Mobile and Sprint both had “DROID” before Verizon.

I gave up on Windows Mobile a few years ago when I felt they fell behind every other UI but after watching this video I must say…… I like what I see! Very impressed.

  • zack

Oh God I certainly hope this is fake. How about instead of a 3 second gratuitous animation you just show me the godforsaken weather? Not to mention they strayed so far from the metro ui design theme that this looks like it’s on a different platform.

HTC why do you feel the need to add this unnecessary Sense garbage onto all of your phones?

    • J

I agree I wish my HTC had stock Android. Its so stupid how they have Sense its just eye candy I have to wait forever for HTC to update their OS to catch up to Google! :(

The thing is throngs of your average phone users eat this stuff up.

It’s the same with big glossy buttons that take up half the screen, and giant widgets that don’t really tell you more than one thing. Ever since the iPhone the dumbing down or pocket devices have been marching further and further in this direction.

The PDA is no longer a productive device to help you in your day, it’s something to show off at the bar so people know what a hipster you are.

Sorry HTC, but i find those “enhancements” tacky. I hope they dont alter or put too much interface add-on on Windows Phone 7 and destroy the whole UI design concept. Because to me, WP7′s Metro UI is already great. If it aint broke, dont fix it.

  • serpentor

Holy fck I hope they have an option to turn animations OFF.

I understand where htc is coming from – cool stuff definitely sells people on the hardware. That’s something Apple knows. But having to sit through this day in and day out would drive me nuts.

  • serpentor

Someone tell these OEMs the reason why iOS used animations was to mask how slow the UI is. Please don’t copy this if you are targeting this to people who do actual work instead of playing games.

    • zack

iOS is slow? Not so much.

I like a bit of animation but this is excessive.

      • serpentor

The UI itself is slow. I think someone at Apple already admitted this – the animation going from home screen to the app opening – they animated it because having the little pause for an app to open would make it feel even slower. At least with the animation the POS looks like / feels like it’s doing something while you wait.

iOS is not sow at all is the fastest of all mobile OS’s im running 4.0 on an iphone 3GS and believe it does things faster than the Evo!!!

      • hypesquad

You “believe” or it does? It must not include spell check…

      • R. Mutt

@Alan I agree with the others, iOs has a few things going for it but speed is definitely not one of them. And what Serpentor says it’s true, Apple practically invented those time wasting animation to hide how slow their Os is, and it would be a tragedy if this becomes a standard for other companies.

  • RobertM

    Wow that weather is sexy.

  • ChocoTaco

Ugh, WP7 isn’t even out yet and it’s already being molested with some clunky third party UI. Why can’t these companies just leave well enough alone? Leave the software alone and let the hardware speak for itself. How nice would it be if we could just get software updates directly from Google for ALL devices at once – something like Windows Update can do for any Windows PC. With these stupid custom UI’s these manufacturers keep forcing on us, this will NEVER HAPPEN.

    UGH!

    • tedkord

Maybe because MS is incapable of producing well enough?

  • iamajim

    Very Courier-esque eh?

  • Sean

I feel like… UIs have become more eye candy than functionally time efficient. When I interact with my hardware I need things done… effecantly. Ways to do this: less steps and shorter load-times in between these steps.

In my opinion the UI shouldn’t get fancy and cool, the apps developed for it should!

  • Daniel

Have any of you actually owned an htc phone? Not only are they bullet proof, but every one that i have had (tilt, fuze, tilt II) allows you to turn off there UI and use the default WM UI which IS absolute CRAP. SO whether or not they do the same with windows phone 7 i am sure they would allow you to choose there UI or the default UI from Microsoft. Fret not my chums, all will be well in finger flicky land.

    • 9

i have the htc pure and agree 100%. wm6.5 is ok stock, but turn on htc sense and bam the phone software becomes much easier to use and looks better. Can an iphone owner say their device can do that without voiding your warranty? No you get one option and its really not that great. I say if your grandma can use your phone its probably not that special of a device. Iphones are dumbed down for the stupid masses.

  • MichaelSF

What’s a “flower pedal” widget? Or is that the writer simply being a dumb azz?

    • iknowaeiou

That’s how you make the flowers go.

  • naughty_nicky

So i take it that with the new UI, my battery will be further reduced down to 2hrs?

  • iknowaeiou

Sense is a godsend on WM 6.5. On Android, not so much.

And if this video is true, well, they need to give up the ghost. The pointless eye-candy ghost.

Hell – they should’ve spent less on Sense and more on Palm. HTC + webOS would’ve been a f*cking giant.

    • 9

      agreed

  • offdayjb

holy shit, this looks great! looks like M$ n HTC will b the ones 2 revolutionize phones. bring it on!!
