Salomondrin took BlackBerry’s upcoming webkit browser — expected to debut in OS 6.0 — and ran it through its paces using a BlackBerry 9800 Slider. Salomondrin subjected the browser to several acid tests, the de facto standard for browser performance, and compared the results with the iPhone 4 and the HTC Incredible. Much to the surprise of many a reader, the BlackBerry webkit browser scored 208 on the test and outperformed both the iPhone 4 which scored 185 and the HTC Incredible which scored 151. Salomondrin also put together a nice video review which compares the current non-webkit browser with the upcoming webkit version highlighting the goodness that is to come to the world of BlackBerry. Video is after the jump for your viewing pleasure.

As a former Blackberry user, had the Storm for 2 years, I never understood the appeal of BB Messenger. I mean, if I want to chat with anyone, texting is too 90s. I generally just jumped on the gchat app or trillian and chatted away with anyone, no matter whether they were in the US or outside of it.

BB may be getting a nice browser sometime in the future, but I waited for a whole year after I got my Storm, and BB really did nothing to cater to me as a customer to stay with them. Android and iPhone, though not perfect, have much better apps, OS integration, and an overall better experience.

The transfer for me, from my BB Storm to the Droid X was painless, and now I know what I was missing with the BB Storm.

FYI: I have not had to do a battery pull, uninstall memory & battery draining apps (almost every app in BBs AppWorld)….it’s refreshing to just have a smartphone that works, and works well.

You know the difference between BBM and other IM clients right? If not, maybe you’re better with the Droid X.

Oh yeah, I forgot, the Droid X, with always connected gchat, twitter, facebook, buzz, games, etc, lasts far longer than my Storm 1 ever did. This past weekend, with heavy browsing via Wi-Fi, app usage, game playing, movie watching and podcasts, my Droid X lasted charged from 12 pm to 1 am, or roughly 13hrs. With my Storm, I usually had to keep most of these apps turned off or have a charger at hand because just using 1 game, or watching one movie would drain almost 70% of the energy in no time.

Morever, I’ve installed almost 30 apps, and my Droid X isn’t even feeling it, thanks to the 8Gb of internal memory. And the games, there’s nothing comparable in BB Appworld right now, nothing…

Is there a reason why the writer doesn’t use pronouns in this article?

    • Robert

It is kind of strange, but to be fair she did use it in the first line, which is a pronoun.

so this is what became of Torch Mobile and their Iris Browser.

Dude wtf man I can’t see the video, this is a sad day :’(

I wish they would have compared using one of the faster Android phones. The Nexus One runs *much* faster than the Incredible right now because the Nexus One is running 2.2. I *thought* everyone knew there was a huge speed jump from 2.1 to 2.2? Or they could have used one of the new Samsung phones that, even running 2.1, are super fast because of the hummingbird processor.

Too Little Too Late, that ship sailed away, I have had lots of very good BB but Android has taken me away, and I am not coming back. In the past I left BB for some windows phones and some palms but went back to BB. No more for me. It was fun, Good luck with it.

cool man , BB is coming to rock the party

  • mosamjc

This is quite a flawed test. Android 2.2 on the nexus one or any other android would have been a better than this slighted 2.1 demonstration. Sure, show android’s last/current generation browser without JIT against a browser and an os that isn’t even available. That makes perfect sense to me.

    • jah

is 2.2 even out on none rooted phones?

      • mosamjc

Only stock nexus ones, but available never the less.
