There are less than three months to go until Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters, and we just saw the second trailer for the upcoming MCU blockbuster. We also finally saw Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) in full, as the teaser trailer only teased his presence.
It’s safe to say that I’m more excited than ever to see Deadpool 3, especially considering that I still don’t know what happens in it. That’s a major change for the Multiverse Saga. Until now, the plot of every Marvel movie in Phases 4 and 5 leaked well before the premiere.
However, the Deadpool 3 plot is a much better-kept secret. So is the mind-blowing Deadpool & Wolverine credit scene, which many insiders are apparently aware of but aren’t ready to share.
The Deadpool 3 cameos haven’t been as well protected, and that’s understandable. As I explained plenty of times before, Deadpool & Wolverine is a multiverse adventure, so everything is game to Marvel. The trailers have practically confriemd the multiverse aspect. It’s the only way to move Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) to the MCU without bending logic.
That said, I didn’t see the following Deadpool & Wolverine cameo coming, and, in hindsight, I should have. Before I can tell you what it is, I’ll drop the usual disclaimer: Deadpool 3 spoilers might follow below.
Why so many cameos?
Ever since Deadpool 3 was announced, we saw plenty of cameo rumors that made incredible sense. On the one hand, we have the characters from the first two Deadpool movies that Fox made before Disney bought them. Those movies are part of Fox’s universe of Marvel movies, which feature all the recent X-Men movies and two different Fantastic Four versions.
Some Deadpool 3 cameo rumors then said that plenty of mutants from the X-Men movies would also appear in Deadpool & Wolverine. These cameos also made sense.
After all, Deadpool will have to leave that universe behind, and so will Marvel. Deadpool & Wolverine is the unique chance for Marvel to repeat the Spider-Man: No Way Home multiverse magic.
Instead of Spider-Man variants, we’ll get mutants reuniting, no matter how briefly. Wolverine, of course, is part of that Fox universe.
We’ve even had rumors claiming that some actors from the Fox Fantastic Four movies might appear in the Deadpool sequel. Specifically, Chris Evans could return to his Human Torch role, a character he played long before becoming the MCU’s iconic Captain America.
Some reports said that Ben Affleck’s Daredevil and Jennifer Garner’s Elektra would also appear in the Deadpool sequel.
Wesley Snipes to return as Blade
What I’m trying to say is that I should have seen Wesley Snipes’ Blade possibly appearing in Deadpool 3. For starters, Marvel is preparing to reboot Blade, with Mahershala Ali set to play the titular character. The film might start shooting this year and could hit theaters in 2025, assuming Spider-Man 4 doesn’t take its place.
Secondly, Marvel is obviously looking to honor all the movies featuring Marvel characters that predated the MCU. The multiverse angle lets it get away with it. And, again, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to intersect all these separate storylines spanning more than 30 years of storytelling. As a reminder, Wesley Snipes’ first Blade movie dropped in 1998.
Finally, Blade: Trinity features a certain Ryan Reynolds actor. Of course, you’d want Snipes to appear in Deadpool 3.
It just so happens that there’s talk about Wesley Snipes returning to the role. It comes from a trusted source, too, Marvel insider Daniel Richtman. Apparently, Snipes might have signed on to return as Blade in multiple MCU films.
It’s all starting with Deadpool & Wolverine, which is the likeliest place for such a wild cameo. I was a fan of the Blade movies long before the MCU came along. I’d definitely want to see what Snipes can do nearly 30 years later, especially in a film featuring the Merc with a Mouth.
It’s all a setup for Avengers: Secret Wars
As for the claim that Snipes might appear in multiple Multiverse Saga movies, that also makes sense. I will remind you that rumors say many non-MCU superheroes would join the Avengers in Secret Invasion to defeat Kang and his allies.
The list might include previous Spider-Man variants and Fox mutants, including Deadpool and Wolverine. It would be the proper send-off for many of these characters. Weseley Snipes’ Blade could always be one of them.
Not to mention that having all these glorious cameos in Secret Wars lets Marvel kill as many of them as it wants without impacting the future of the MCU after Secret Wars. That’s just speculation, however.
Thankfully, we won’t have to wait that long to see whether the Deadpool 3 cameo rumors come true. One thing seems to be clear, as The Looper notes, and that’s Snipes’s desire to return to the role. He said a couple of years ago that he’d be willing to return but that Marvel had not asked him.
