Apple will officially announce the iPhone 6 on September 9, Re/code has learned. Apparently, the iPhone maker has scheduled a “big media event,” on that date, although the exact details are not available yet. Invites for the media have not been sent out at this time either.

FROM EARLIER: Now we know why the iPhone 6’s release date might get pushed back to October

“As with September events past, the focal point of this one is to be Apple’s next-generation iPhones, which are expected to feature larger displays of 4.7 and 5.5 inches and run speedy new A8 processors,” the publication wrote. “Apple declined comment.”

Various reports suggested that Apple will release the iPhone 6 in mid-September, following a special media event, although some people claimed the iPhone 6 will launch later than anticipated, in mid-October.

September 9 falls on a Tuesday, and the company may start selling the handset in stores the following week, on Friday, September 19, in line with its previous iPhone announcement and launch policy. iOS 8 will likely be released at some point between the iPhone 6 announcement and its launch in stores, with preorders also expected to kick off soon after the media event.

It’s not clear at this time whether both iPhone 6 models will be unveiled and/or launched in mid-September, with some reports suggesting that Apple may be intentionally delaying the 5.5-inch version, in order for it not to compete with the smaller 4.7-inch model, and give both devices their own place in the spotlight.

Apple has reportedly ordered up to 80 million iPhone 6 units from suppliers for 2014, for what could turn out to be the company’s biggest iPhone launch yet.

UPDATE: Fresh reports from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg independently confirm Apple’s September 9 event, where the company is supposed to unveil brand new iPhone models.
