If you think 2K displays are unnecessary for a smartphone, just wait until you see what’s coming next year. As Techblog.gr reports, Sharp has already announced such a screen that’ll fit 5.5-inch phablets at some point next year, bringing users an ultra-sharp resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, or 806 pixels per inch (ppi).

Sharp’s 4K IGZO displays will take on Samsung’s 4K AMOLED displays that are also expected to debut at some point in the near future, with the Galaxy Note 5 being the first device believed to pack a 4K screen.

It’s too early to say what 2016 smartphones will feature 4K IGZO screens, but Sharp is already providing IGZO display technology to Apple for certain products, with the iPad Pro also being rumored to pack IGZO screens. Considering that Apple has a phablet in its lineup now, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a next-gen iPhone pack 4K displays from Sharp.

Apple has never tried to match competing devices when it comes to specs, and for the time being the company appears to be interested in delivering a Retina experience across devices. But at the same time, Apple does have a 5K iMac in its lineup, as well as support for 4K external displays in certain Macs, and the company is rumored to be working on a top-of-the-line 8K iMac. Thus, it wouldn’t be surprising to see iPhone 7 models of the future with 4K screens.
