Apple suppliers cut iPhone 4 production ahead of iPhone 5 launch

mobile

Printed circuit board (PCB) suppliers in Taiwan have noticed “disappointing orders” for iPhone and iPad hardware, according to DigiTimes. As a result, the suppliers have cut quotes by 10% on average for the second quarter, noting that there’s no sign of a rebound. The drop in iPhone hardware orders suggests that Apple’s highly anticipated next-generation iPhone is imminent; it’s largely expected that the company will take the wraps off of the device in September. The PCB suppliers that are cutting hardware sales expectations include Compeq Manufacturing, Nan Ya PCB, Tripod Technology and Unimicron Technology.

New iPhone in September, Ice Cream Sandwich in October. Apple loses.

    • Anonymous

Just keep telling yourself that. If you say it enough times you might even start to believe it.

      • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

Haha I know all of you iOS guys are terrified of what ICS will bring. It’s so damn true. A unified Android OS is the only thing keeping it back from gaining even MORE marketshare…and hearts, of course.

    • Anonymous

      So, same time next year?

    • Anonymous

Apple has not lost since ’96. They have gone up ever since. It’s funny that there is new hardware running android every week or two and nobody but the fandroids care. A new iphone or ipad come out once a year and it’s worldwide news….. funny.

      • Lololol

Hey fanboys, it’s just a phone!! Get some lives!

      • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

You apparently like being forever behind the curve.

Was that when msft bailed them out?

I wonder how many devices will actually run Ice Cream Sandwich.  Maybe the new Nexus and that’s it until next year.

    • Anonymous

And existing Android phones should get and ICS update by oh…June 2012 or later?

Yeah, pretty sure Apple has nothing to worry about there.

    • Anonymous

Ice Cream Sandwich in October. 1% of Android devices should have it by February.

    • http://www.facebook.com/cameronlee.ya Cameron Lee

I prefer ice cream over apples, so I guess I should get an Android phone instead of the iPhone. Right?

  • Samuels Mitch

Or people just quit buying crappy iphones.

    • Anonymous

Ya people should continue to by crappy android phones

      • Joe112

If androids phones is crappy then why Apple is copying them.? Hahaha..

      • Anonymous

I think you have the words androids and Apple mixed up.

  • Anonymous

This is good news for several people I know. Some of them are chomping at the bit for the iPhone 5/4S/whatever, while a few others have been awaiting the price drop that will no doubt follow for the iPhone 4.

  • joshie

A 10% drop doesn’t sound unreasonable for a phone that’s about to have its first birthday.

    • Eric Walker

A phone that’s about to have it’s first birthday is still better than an Android any day.

        Opinion

    • Anonymous

actually, this would be its fifth birthday. iphone, iphone3G, iphone 3GS, iphone4….

      • joshie

Fifth birthday for the iPhone brand yes, but those are all completely different phones (though the 3G and 3GS are pretty close).

      • Anonymous

5th birthday pal…its the same phone every time with minor upgrades

      • joshie

greatness10, you’re doing an excellent job of completely missing the point.

      • Anonymous

        Ummm no ….
        iPhone 2007-2008
        iPhone 3G 2008-2009
        iPhone 3Gs 2009-2010
        iPhone 4 2010-2011

        Total time four years

So even if the new iphone is announced its still on year 4 for now

      • Anonymous

Ya, and this next phone, coming out in september will be the 5th generation. You literally spelled it out, how stupid are you?

  • IDC

wow , you guys really care!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

Well orders would have been cut a while ago if iPhone 5 would have come out this month so not sure why they are “disappointed”. Don’t they got through this every year when Apple is about to release the new iPhone?  Why are they surprised?

did no one think of the conclusion that production might be reduced b/c demand is slowing down? this != imminent iphone 5.

another excuse to post something about iphones (not an iphone hater, but hater of completely unfounded rumors that make strange jumps to conclusions).

    • Anonymous

Because its absolutely unfounded to think that Apple would continue its current strategy of releasing a new phone every year, and lowering production of the current model would have nothing at all to do with that.  Unfounded rumors…

      • Anonymous

prove to me there’s an iphone 5 in the works and what the release date is. until then, i stick closer to market trends and what the economy is doing.

  • Anonymous

I just hope the T-Mobile rumor is true.  I’d really like to stop playing the unlocking game.

  • Anonymous

Here’s my problem with this. When RIM cuts forecasts on their phones, everyone goes nuts. Analysts say they’re dying, the media tells people not to buy their devices, etc, etc. But this is only because they haven’t released a new phone in a year…..BUT…when apple does it, its no biggie. How is that even right?

    • Michael Scrip

Apple cutting output by 10% this quarter isn’t really heartbreaking when Apple sold 18 million iPhones last quarter…

Using these numbers… Apple would still be producing 16.2 million iPhones this quarter.

      No biggie indeed.

  • Anonymous

Screw yall, I’m holding out for the iphone 6!!!!

  • I Bought It From You

I’ve never seen a drop in sales framed so optimistically. Seriously.

  • I Bought It From You

By the way, the product loyalism scares me. It tells the marketing execs they need to work on better commercials instead of better phones. Don’t be a patsy to anyone. They all offer some nice tech, and they all suck in some ways. Be your own.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Cave/15601620 Ben Cave

I completely agree with you, being a fan of both Google and Apple, it’s fun watching how people go crazy defending one device over another.  If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear people probably think they birthed Google (or Apple) from their own loins.

next iphone releases and watch all the subpar android users complain.
no dual core 1.2 hz or whatever tegra android crap can compare to a 512 mb ram iphone 4 LOL

the android operating system just sucks compared to iOS.

once the iphone gets the bigger screen, then what will android users be able to hang their hat on?
people always hate on greatness & money.
android TRIED flooding the maret with tablets and look what happened (epic fail)
once the iphone gets on every carrier (tmobile and sprint are next) android will no longer exist.

dont hate me, it is what it is

and YES…..this comes from a previous sprint evo unhappy user who got out of contract :)
i went with att & iphone 4 in feb 2011 and couldnt be happier

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR6HpRLyzMY Walter Sobchak

You’re right “dual core 1.2hz tegra crap and 512 MB ram iPhone 4″ can’t compare, but that is because they are two different things.
” the android operating system just sucks compared to iOS.” See that is an OPINION. I disagree with your OPINION. I think Ios sucks, but that’s just because I want access to the file system and ability to download a file from the internet. Again though, just my OPINION.
“once the iphone gets the bigger screen what will android users be able to hang their hat on? ”
How people who said all along that they didn’t want choice, actually did.
