Any iPhone 6s owner who has installed the Google Maps app should definitely make sure the latest version is installed, as Google released a new update that’ll get you a Maps experience that’s not available anywhere else — not even on Android.
DON’T MISS: The best thing about Apple’s new iPhone SE might not be the phone itself
Google added 3D Touch features to Google Maps in version 4.16.0, which lets you quickly get directions to work and home with a firm press on the app’s icon. That means you don’t have to open the app and manually set directions for your next destination, whether it’s a saved location or not.
Sure these are just shortcuts that, while handy, aren’t necessarily a game-changer for your Google Maps experience.
As Apple evolves 3D Touch it’s likely that apps will get more advanced features that take advantage of the new functionality, extending beyond helpful shortcuts across the board. Considering that Google has already added 3D Touch support to some of its iOS apps, it’ll be interesting to see whether the company adds 3D Touch-like functionality to its next iteration of Android, which is due to be introduced in May.
The new Google Maps version for iOS also includes a major update that all iPhone users will be able to enjoy, and it’s one that has been available on Android since October. Starting with version 4.16.0 of Google Maps for iOS, you’ll be able to add points of interest to your route without altering your destination. That means you can easily detour to gas stations, restaurants, stores and other stops.
