Lenovo (0992) may be the world’s second-largest PC vendor, but it knows that it desperately needs to step up its game in the mobile world to stay relevant. Bloomberg reports that Lenovo CFO Wong Wai Ming told the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday that his company is looking at a variety of options to boost its mobile game, including buying BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIMM).
“We are looking at all opportunities — RIM and many others,” he said. “We’ll have no hesitation if the right opportunity comes along that could benefit us and shareholders.”
At first glance this idea seems to have some merit since RIM’s enterprise-centric smartphones would seem to be a good fit with Lenovo’s enterprise laptops and tablets. According to Bloomberg, Ming said that Lenovo already “has a team working on possible acquisitions” that “has spoken to RIM and its bankers about various combinations or strategic ventures.”
Ming wouldn’t say if the company planned to make a formal offer to buy RIM anytime soon.
