A recent report from an analyst with a good track record at predicting Apple’s next steps revealed some details about the upcoming iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, including camera specs. Constant camera improvements helped Apple turn the iPhone into a very popular device for taking photos and recording video, even thought the iPhone hasn’t upped its megapixel count for the past several years. However, a second report now says Apple might indeed increase the number of megapixels of its main camera, which would be a first since the iPhone 4s launched in 2011.

According to a Weibo message from IHS China Technology Research Director Kevin Wang, Apple’s newest iPhones will have a 12-megapixel camera on board, just as KGI Securities’s Ming-Chi Kuo said a few days ago. Starting with the iPhone 4s, all iPhones had an 8-megapixel camera, although each generation received camera upgrades in other areas besides megapixel count.
Wang also added that the new cameras will have smaller pixels than the 8-megapixel camera found in the current iPhone 6 models. However, the analyst did not reveal other details about the iPhone 6s or its front-facing camera.
As G for Games points out, bigger pixels help out with low-light photography. At the same time, only megapixel count and size won’t tell the full story of the iPhone 6s’ camera.
