Apple is once again the top-selling smartphone vendor in the United States. According to the latest numbers from research firm comScore, the company’s iPhone was found to have a 39.2% market share, up 1.4 percentage points from January. Samsung experienced only marginal growth prior to the release of its Galaxy S4 smartphone, increasing from 21.4% to 22% in April. HTC’s market share declined from 9.7% to 8.9%, likely the result of poor sales from the DROID DNA and delays to the HTC One. Rounding out the top five smartphone vendors were Motorola and LG, which respectively accounted for 8.3% and 6.7% of the market.
To no one’s surprise, Google’s Android operating system ranked as the top smartphone platform, controlling 52% of the market. The operating system has slowly lost market share to Apple over the past six months, however. Android’s market share has fallen from highs of 53.6% in October 2012, while Apple’s share of the market has grown from 34.3% last fall to 39.2% in April. Despite releasing their new operating systems, BlackBerry and Microsoft remain irrelevant in the U.S. mobile market. BlackBerry’s market share fell from 5.9% in January to 5.1% in April, while Windows Phone remained flat at 3%
