HTC is the latest company rumored to be working on a Nexus tablet for Google, after recent rumors have named Samsung, Asus, LG and Lenovo (Motorola) among the companies that could make such devices. Unsurprisingly, HTC did not confirm reports, telling the Commercial Times that it “does not comment on market rumors or speculation,” Focus Taiwan says.
The Taiwanese company, which is expected to soon unveil the HTC One successor and launch a smartwatch by Christmas, is said to have “won orders for a high-end model of the Google Nexus tablet like that will begin shipping in the third quarter of 2014.” HTC has so far manufactured only one Nexus device, the Nexus One smartphone, and did not have any success in the tablet market, with its only Android tablets being announced and sold in small quantities in 2011.
Google is expected to launch more Nexus devices in 2014, but is reportedly going to kill the family in favor to Google Play Edition devices next year. The company has only launched a 7-inch device in 2013, made by Asus, with a 10-inch Nexus tablet refresh rumored to be in the works. Samsung, Asus and LG have been reported as the companies for the job in the previous months, but only LG delivered an almost Nexus-like tablet – the 8.3-inch LG G Tab 8.3 Google Play Edition.
Recently, Lenovo was rumored to be working on a Nexus device that would be launched later this year, although it’s not clear whether the company would make a smartphone or a tablet, or whether Motorola will be involved in any way.
