As improbable as it might seem, we might be getting a new iPhone much sooner than we’d expected in 2014. Digitimes‘ supply chain sources claim that Apple is “rumored to be planning a larger size iPhone for May 2014, using a 20nm processor manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.” While Digitimes doesn’t give any more details about the next-generation iPhone’s specifications, multiple reports suggest that the device will feature a display in the 5-inch neighborhood, which is still bigger than the current iPhone but not quite as huge as phablets such as the Galaxy Note 3.

Releasing a device with a larger display is an interesting move for Apple because it will be a rare instance where the company will be following rival Samsung, which first sparked the phablet craze back in 2012 with its original Galaxy Note. It would be rare to see Apple release a new version of the iPhone so close to the release of its latest iPhone 5s but maybe the company doesn’t want to wait much longer to put out a device with a larger form factor.

Digitimes‘ sources also confirm earlier reports about Apple releasing a 12.9-inch “iPad Pro” tablet that will be targeted toward North American educational markets. According to Digitimes, Apple will likely launch the larger version of the iPad in October 2014.
