Even if you’re not watching Game of Thrones, you probably know the sixth season of HBO’s top TV show to date has just ended, and what a massive season finale that was. That said, HBO’s story isn’t done, and Game of Thrones showrunners still have a good 15 hours of storytelling to do, which will be spread across two new seasons. But HBO already inadvertently – or maybe intentionally – told everyone who Jon Snow’s parents are well ahead of the upcoming season. Beware, major spoilers follow below.
HBO on Sunday finally showed us what we’ve long suspected, that Jon Snow might be Ned Stark’s nephew. Ned’s sister Lyanna died soon after giving birth to a boy, but not before begging Ned to raise and protect him from the wrath of Robert Baratheon.
Bran sees all that in a vision in the last episode of season 6, and he probably realizes that the boy is Jon Snow. He doesn’t hear the entire conversation between Ned and Lyanna and doesn’t know the name of the boy or who his father is. One of the most popular fan theories about Game of Thrones is that Lyanna and Rhaegar Targaryen are the parents of Jon Snow.
I’d expect such a revelation to occur either in season 7 or season 8 of the show, but HBO just confirmed it in the following infographic. The image was posted on MakingGameofThrones.com, which is the officially official Game of Thrones blog.
The graphic tells us who’s who in Westeros during the reign of The Mad King. We see family relationships and allegiances in the image above. We also see who killed whom, and who abducted whom.
We’ll ignore most of it and only focus on Jon Snow. His parents are Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna, and Ned Stark is Jon Snow’s guardian.
Looking at Daenerys Targaryen, we’ll find out that she’s the daughter of Rhaella Targaryen and Aerys II Targaryen (The Mad King) and the sister of Rhaegar and Viserys.
So, Daenerys does have a rightful claim to the throne, we already know that. But so does Jon Snow, who’s her nephew – check out the full infographic below.
