Wireless charging isn’t in the cards for the iPhone 7, at least according to the various reports we’ve seen so far. But Apple might be working on an iPhone case of its own that would give the iPhone wireless charging powers.
After all, this isn’t such a novel idea, and you can already buy similar accessories that would let your iPhone charge wirelessly.
A new report from the Chinese paper Economic Daily News picked up by Digitimes, says Apple issued a request for quotation to MediaTek for wireless charging chips for an iPhone case. The request was issued “recently,” although it’s not clear what that means for Apple’s planned iPhone 7 launch. Mediatek is only one of the companies providing quotes for such components to Apple. NXP and IDT have received similar requests from the iPhone maker.
The paper says that Apple is likely to create peripherals including cases that would test out wireless charging technology for the iPhone. But there aren’t any details regarding a potential rollout date.
Some of the older iPhone 7 leaks suggested the iPhone 7 Plus may ship with a Smart Connector on the back that would support wireless charging. Most of the newest iPhone 7 images that leaked online showed iPhone 7 Plus cases lacking the port.
It would not be that surprising to see Apple create its own battery cases with wireless charging support. Let’s just hope they’ll be better looking than its battery cases.
