Despite the immense challenges involved in bringing a car to market, many have taken as fact that Apple will eventually release an electric car, perhaps as early as 2019. And like any fine-tuned rumor, this belief is based on a number of intriguing factual developments. For instance, it’s no secret that Apple has made a number of extremely interesting hires from the automotive industry. Additionally, it’s no secret that Apple appears to be buying large swaths of real estate in California, purportedly for automotive testing purposes.

So while I think it’s clear that Apple is in fact researching an electric car, I’m still not ready to make the leap and assume that their research will ultimately result in a bonafide car. As we saw with Apple’s HDTV research, the company routinely explores new products that ultimately never make it to market. The reality is this: we really don’t know all that much about what Apple’s car R&D looks like, nor how far it’s progressed in recent months.

But that may very well change tomorrow.

Earlier today, Motor Trend’s Twitter account teased a number of sketches of a futuristic looking car, all the while implying that they may represent drawings Apple’s long-rumored EV.

“Is THIS the #AppleCar,” the tweet asks, before imploring intrigued Twitter-goers to check back in tomorrow.

We’ll obviously check in tomorrow, but it seems beyond the realm of comprehension that Motor Trend somehow got its hands on genuine Apple Car sketches.
