Report claims a rushed BlackBerry Colt could launch in 2011

mobile

Despite Research In Motion’s largest-ever global launch currently underway with BlackBerry 7 phones, RIM may be rushing to get its first QNX-powered smartphone out the door ahead of schedule. Dutch website Tweakers.net cites anonymous sources in claiming RIM is aiming to launch the BlackBerry Colt later this year instead of in the first quarter of 2012 as expected. BGR exclusively revealed the BlackBerry Colt as RIM’s first QNX device earlier this month, and we said internal prototypes of the phone currently feature a single-core processor. Our source also suggested that future Colt owners would require a new version of BES as the device will be incompatible with current versions of RIM’s enterprise system. Tweakers.net reaffirmed our report that the Colt’s chipset only sports one core, and the site pegs its clock speed at 1.2GHz. The report also claims that the QNX phone will feature a 4.3-inch touchscreen with what should be RIM’s highest-ever smartphone display resolution. No other new details were provided in the report, and little else is known at this time.

of course BGR writes “RUSHED” in the title. Maybe they’re finally ahead of schedule on something? Ever think? And i’m sorry but dual core is not a necessity if it destroys battery life. The 9900 is blazing fast even on a 10 year old OS. Think what it’ll be like on a brand new os…..oh BGR, always gotta put a negative spin on positive news from RIM.

Zach can’t help himself. He has no idea what objective journalism is.

They never claimed to be journalists. It’s that simple. It’s a blog. They can post what they want.

      • http://twitter.com/UrbanEnigma Yves

And that’s exactly why tech bloggers are never taken seriously. They need to leave opinions for the comments section and stick to the facts.

BGR claims to be “America’s number one source of exclusive and breaking mobile news”

However you slice it, if you’re reporting news to the masses, it’s journalism, the practice of investigation and reporting of events, issues and trends to a broad audience.

      • Stormy weather

Yes, we should all calm down. The last time RIM pushed a device out the door pronto in response to the competition in the market, aka “The Storm” you couldn’t find anybody with a bad word to say out it !! No wait……

    • QNX

Blackberry’s are the best Smartphones, and everything else is inferior.  If you disagree, you are wrong.

Thats because Zachoff wrote it. He’s so in love with Apple and his iPhone its pathetic.

    • numetheus

How is this positive? They are rushing a product out the door because they know consumers won’t flock to the Blackberry OS 7 phones. They need to have it ready by Christmas or they know it will hurt them in the market as people flock to the new Android phones or iPhone 5 en-mass. RIM isn’t stupid … they are just slow. EXTREMELY slow. The bad part about a rushed product are the flaws first gen units. I can already predict horror stories from this rushed venture.

I have already decided to finally go Blackberry once again with my personal device when QNX phones come out. No way in hell I’m getting the POS phones with the decrepit BB OS 7 on it. And there is no way in hell I’m getting a rushed out the door product.

      • Applesucksfatties

you back again Mother Theresa?  I happen to disagree (and your faithful leader iGeller does too) that the 9900 is one of the best BB handsets ever produced and one of the top phones on the market.

      • numetheus

Whether or not YOU think it is one of the best phones on the market is completely pointless. Fact is, I seriously doubt the 9900 will save RIM in the consumer space. You can be naive all you want …. but I seriously doubt it’s going to sway the mass public into taking to Blackberry like they do Android or iPhone. And it sure as hell isn’t going to improve their failing app market. To be around longer than iPhone or Android, and have an app market like they do now is very sad.

And … I do agree. The hardware is amazing. BlackBerry OS 7 as well as its app infrastructure are pathetic. If this was a QNX device or has Android, it would do much better. It’s BBOS that it pathetic … not the phone itself.

9900 will fail. RIM has a chance when QNX devices come out either end of this year of Q1 in the next. I love the Playbook … but there is no way in hell I’m getting ANYTHING with BBOS 7. I WILL be on the QNX phone bandwagon as soon as they release one with good hardware.

      • http://twitter.com/gyubok Gyubok Baik

I think what Jhonny’s saying is that at times like this with RIM consistently going down (whether they deserve it or not), it doesn’t hurt if we, as a public, see a news like this as a positive thing, at least for advancement of technology via corporate competitions sake. Since nobody know the real story, Jhonny’s opinion doesn’t have more credibility than yours but you seem to also bash on people who have different opinion than yours.

I saw couple of your comments in the past several days and holy shit you bash everyone that seem to have slightest positive perspective on RIM, it’s disgusting. I think you should stay clear of commenting on tech blogs for a while, truthfully it makes your ugly face on your display picture look uglier.

      • http://twitter.com/gyubok Gyubok Baik

wow i can’t believe I used the word “credibility” and “opinion” in the same sentence. What I meant is Jhonny’s theory vs. your theory are just “theories” and that’s no reason to bash someone for giving their two cents.

      • numetheus

And you say this with the ugly one you have on your pics? Really it’s no different than people bashing Apple at every turn, or iPhone people bashing Android. The only thing most of us DO agree on … is Blackberry has done a pisspoor job competing. And you know what? The consumer smartphone market as a whole agrees. There are ugly naive people like yourself here. And that’s okay … you have a right to voice your opinion. But don’t pretend like you don’t have bias, and there aren’t mass fanboys on either side bashing the other at every turn. The only difference with RIM … is that the people that really like Blackberry as a consumer device are few.

      • numetheus

My theory is supported by a) current state of the smartphone industry, b) current trends of consumers towards hardware choice, and c) a lack of change into what most consumers dislike about them … the OS. What is the opposing theory supported by? The simple hope this one device WILL change their current decline? A weatherman can predict the weather based on CURRENT conditions and trends … and a lot of times they are right. Someone can predict how something will do by analyzing trends. I have more to support MY prediction of their failure. It is more likely it will fail than the oposite. Now … you can put your head in a sandhole and pretend RIM ISN’T failing in the consumer space; but … this is reality. RIM IS FAILING in the consumer space. The only thing that will change that is to show people Blackberry has changed. You don’t do that by reusing the same crap OS people dislike and bolting on liquid graphics. Commercials on TV focus on app-running phones because why? Trend shows the market wants to run apps … and it’s leading to the uptick of Android and iPhone smartphones. Blackberry doesn’t fit that new trend … AT ALL. QNX? Maybe THAT will change things.

      • Steve Jenkins

Bang some more roids into your ass, then trash someones comments for being opposite of yours, its all cooool, we know what your about…

      • numetheus

How does this make you different? You just trashed someones comment for having THEIR own opinion. According to you, nobody can have an opinion oposite one FOR RIM? You are a moron.

      • Applesucksfatties

Agree to disagree then.. because numerous blogs have given high grades for the new BB7 devices (and the changes to the OS)… with the Bold 9900 getting the best grade of all of the new phones.   I find it funny how you say BlackBerries are currently terrible yet.. 1.  RIM was selling a fair amount of them even right before the BB7 devices started dropping and 2. YOU (and your fellow iPhone/Android brethren)  still have yet to share what an Android/iPhone can do that a BB7 device can’t… other than being able to download millions of fart apps.

      • numetheus

Lots. I want an all rounded SINGLE device. With my Android (and also with an iPhone), I can fully administer my network. I have zabbix and opennms clients, a Citrix receiver that works well. Better support for working on the go. I can look at data easily when someone sends me a large spreadsheet. I have a work issued blackberry … I HATE using it to navigate large spreadsheets. Pain in the butt. Tons of network tools for troubleshooting on the Android side. What does blackberry have? Absolutely nothing …. just a good email client. Period. Apps suck. I use my personal device for work and use my work BB rarely.

As something that is ALSO a personal device I like to snap photos of my kids. When I am on an administrative meeting at a Lions club camp, I love to snap pictures and do some photo processing/editing, then send it. When I take videos I like to edit it and send it. I like to have video conferences while I am there. Play some games on my downtime (not the crap old world mobile phone games we have on BB).

All of this from ONE device. Blackberry is just a good email client. That is pretty much it. I remember when people said BB Bold was the best BB to date and it would save RIM. It didn’t. People will continue to flock to Android/iPhone because of what it can do. They won’t pay the same amount for a Blackberry with a poor comparative consumer experience. By Q1 next year … reflect on this. BB 9900 will NOT save RIM. The only thing that will is their QNX phone, which I am expecting to get by the 2nd iteration (I hear they are rushing Colt). Unlike you, I am a realist. It’s not that I dislike Blackberry …. it’s that the consumer smartphone industry dislikes them. It doesn’t matter what you or I think. That is where current trends point. Analysts do market research. They aren’t raising expectations for RIM either because of this phone. It won’t change anything. That is reality.

      • Applesucksfatties

Ps.  The fact that you THINK the 9900 won’t save RIM in the consumer space is completely pointless…

RIMM has a long history of poor quality control. That is why I finally ditched them nearly 2 years ago. They deserve what’s become of them and I hope the new OS flopps.

let me guess….another iNerd?  I’ve been using BlackBerrys since the first Pearl model was released….and I’ll continue using them long after all of the crApple lemmings walk over the cliff.

      • http://plus.google.com/100780849097348485078/posts Stynkfysh

Last 7 phones were bb pearl, curve, storm, Droid, Droid x, iPhone 4, and now I have a thunderbolt. iOS is best for variety of apps, Android is best for core apps and multitasking apps, and blackberry is best for typing messages. For months and months I installed every beta version of bb OS on the friggin’ storm hoping fruitlessly that bb would fix the massive problems with it. They never did and were repentant a about. That phone was a have backed piece of garbage that they rushed out because they righfilly saw they brand rapidly fading away. It is no surprise that they are rushing qnx now. Same old RIMM. I am not a fanboy of any platform, but bb is really really bad/stoneage.

      • Applesucksfatties

you had a shit phone.  everyone knows the Storm was a good thought but terrible in reality.  Test out the BB7 devices (namely the 9900) and then come talk to me about the quality of RIM products.

      • http://plus.google.com/100780849097348485078/posts Stynkfysh

I have many friends who have government and corporate issued blackberries. I have plenty of exposure to contemporary blackberries, I just haven’t purchased any. The phones are awesome for messaging and far below the Android/apple standard in terms of capabilities. RIMM abandoned the consumer market for a long time and missed the boat of the wildfire spread of smartphones. Since then they have scrambled to make up ground which has resulted in a decrease in quality. The consumer sales numbers are the indicator that back me up. The RIMM ceos scoffed at the capabilities of the iPhone and called them unnessary, and poor relative battery life of the iPhone and had a severe lack of vision regarding the future of mobile technology. That is not to say that bb isn’t perfect for many people, it is. Just not me and most other people. You, and millions of other people, love their blackberries and are not wrong for it. No need to get upset about it. I am a super power user of tech, as evident of my frequently changing phone, and bb is not a consideration for me.

      • Applesucksfatties

Stynk..  I like the adult response (one doesn’t see that too often on iBGR posts).   One thing that I’ve always questioned iPhone and Android users … but never seem to get a response is “what does your Android/iPhone do that a BlackBerry doesn’t/can’t do?  I know that BlackBerry seems to lack in apps compared to Android and Apple.. but I don’t use a ton of apps.. and the ones I do need, I can find them in the BB App World.  I’d appreciate your feedback on how an Android/iPhone is a superior to BlackBerry.

  • Anonymous

That would be great but pretty sure its not going to happen.

  • Anonymous

I welcome a QNX phone but get it right RIM. No rush if it’s going to be lacking the basic BB stuff.

  • http://MobileGenius.wordpress.com JM

…and this report just happens to come along as RIM’s latest line of BlackBerry smartphones are hitting the market. Announcement of the next one coming early would surely not be good for sales of the current devices. I’m questioning motives and validity here…

So a made up rumour is now used to confirm a made-up rumour?

  • Eddy0384

    another useless acticle

  • Anonymous

    Dear RIM,

If there is even a slightest truth to this crazy rumor, please stop.  Please self-preserve by stopping this stupidity.  I want you to regain your past glory but you will not achieve this by constantly making head-scratching decisions.  It will not matter that the QNX-based OS will make a single-core device as powerful as a dual-core device.  It is all in the perception.  Most of the consumers have been brainwashed into believing that bigger and more (screen, processor, RAM, resolution, etc.) make for a better phone and they will not care to hear your technical explanation of why a single-core QNX will suffice.

Please stop and put out a phone that the consumers want and not what you think consumers should get.  You no longer monopolize the smartphone market.  Those days are long over.  If you can no longer lead, at the least, follow by staying competitive.  While you still lead in the areas of communication/messaging and security, those advantages have been diminished and you can no long compete on those advantages alone.

Please self-preserve.  Please say no to a single-core phones and stay the course (i.e. do not rush) of what you meant to do with the QNX platform.

  • Banofbros

“The report also claims that the QNX phone will feature a 4.3-inch touchscreen”

All the photos so far have shown a BB Colt with keyboard and half screen — when did a 4.3-inch touchscreen come into play?

    • Anonymous

Any photos related to the Colt are pictures of older Blackberrys, or of the Bold 9900. Actual pictures of the device have not been leaked.

  • Rtk777

It ABSOLUTELY NEEDS to be dual core, with at least 1.5 – 2gb of RAM. A GLASS display is a must( whoever came up with a plastic display for the 9850/9860 Torch, ought to be shot ).

    • Applesucksfatties

I don’t disagree with the RAM, but why the battery sucking dual core?  I believe a single 1.2 GHz processor runs QNX just fine.  And yes, glass is a must.

  • http://profiles.google.com/pmendez.hou Pedro Mendez

I am afraid that if RIM rushes it’s QNX device to market it’s going to be buggier then the Storm 1. I would rather wait until next year for a solid device then some crap they slapped together that is going to do little to impress and dig RIM  deeper into the hole.

  • KMDB

This is stupid. Doesn’t everyone remember the rumours that the Playbook was going to support a 1GHZ single core processor. RIM only does this during first phase of testing. They may be “behind the curve” but they aren’t stupid enough to release a device that is anything short of dual core (not because the device may necessarily require it, but for the retards out there who buy a phone specifically on what a spec sheet dictates and not on the experience). Furthermore, the BB7 devices (running 1.2 GHZ single cores) run smoother than any ANDROID device (including those running dual core).

  • Sillyman

So BGR has a section for rumors?  I was under the impression the whole site was devoted to rumors and stuff they made up?
