Daily Android activations surpass 350,000 mark

mobile

In case you haven’t heard, Android is kind of a big deal. Some research firms say it’s already the world’s top smartphone operating system, having recently passed Symbian’s quarterly sales pace for the first time, and just about every firm on the planet is predicting that Android’s market share will continue to grow for the foreseeable future. And it’s not just hot air — Google on Thursday during its first-quarter earnings call revealed that daily Android activations have surpassed the 350,000 mark. That adds up to nearly 2.5 million Android activations each week and about 10.5 million activations each month. Google said in December of last year that it was activating 300,000 Android devices each day, and if it can maintain its current pace there’s no question it will achieve global market dominance for years to come.

Apple is going to announce the same on 20th april at the conference call about the results of fiscal Q2/2011 (Jan-Feb-Mar). Why?

    Do the math: 350k x 90 days = 31,5 millions of devices.

Apple is said to have sold at least 25/26M between iPhones and iPads. Plus there are iPod touches that are the 50% or more of the iPods sold (Apple said that during the fiscal Q1/2011 conference call). Apple is expected to have sold 10+ millions iPods in fiscal Q2/2011.

    And so you get: 26M + 5,5 = 31,5M = 350k iOS devices per day.

    • Michael Scrip

      Exactly.

“Android” is software from Google, that you can find on 50+ devices from a multitude of manufacturers. I’d be shocked if Android numbers weren’t so high… considering how many devices it’s on.

Apple, on the other hand, only makes 5 iPhones… 2 of which are only in the US on Verizon… 3 iPod Touches… and a handful iPads. Apple’s numbers are very impressive for being the only company who makes iOS devices.

      • Jayhammy

Here go the iFanboys blowing smoke again. If Android sucked, then its numbers wouldn’t be so high. Look at Symbian, which was #1 and is now declining, and Windows phones (before Win 7)–they never took off. Google’s Android is a product that provides more features and customization than iOS could ever hope to. That’s what’s making it sell. Crap won’t sell. Good stuff will.
Sure, go ahead and compare that it’s one phone against the world. That logic holds up to a point.

        “It’s the OS, stupid.”

      • Michael Scrip

“Here go the iFanboys blowing smoke again. If Android sucked, then its numbers wouldn’t be so high.”

What smoke? Did I say Android sucked? Absolutely not. I was just explaining the differences between “Android” and the iPhone. They have different business models altogether.

Of course Android sells well… you can get it anywhere on many different phones. Like I said… I’m not shocked by that.

“Crap won’t sell. Good stuff will.”

Define “crap” and “good stuff” please.

The iPhone will always sell. Apple will be selling cell phones for the rest of our lives. Yes… there are more phones sold that run Google’s Android OS than the iPhone. Yet… I don’t think that really bothers Apple. The iPhone hasn’t lost money for Apple yet.

How long has Windows pummeled the Mac? Apple isn’t discontinuing the Mac because of low sales either.

      • Anonymous

It just gives a choice, people chose Android first then cellphone.
People chose iOS first then cellphone which is one.

The reason to why Android is selling so much is cause they have phones in all prices.
While iPhone only sells expensive phones, just like PC vs Mac.

      • Anonymous

If Apple thought it was a smart thing to sell more than 1 phone they would have done so, but they would have lost. It wouldn’t be good for business, they do what they do. They are happy with 8-9% of the computer market, and they will be happy with 15% of the smartphone market. While Google won’t be happy until they are the biggest cause that’s the reasonable goal and reasonable tactics to make it work.
While Apple makes it work by doing what they do.

  • http://twitter.com/ggore Glenn Gore

With HTC introducing 2-3 of the “next big thing” Android phones every week, all running old versions of the OS 2.1 or 2.2 by the way, it’s no wonder why activations are this high. Personally I would rather be running my iPhone, with its automatic backups and completely up-to-date software, thank you. There are some nice Android phones, I will admit that, and I have owned one for 2 years; but the overall experience is just not what the iPhone offers.

    • http://www.droiddoes.com/ Norm

But it’s free and open which makes it better.

      • http://twitter.com/rogerdodgerTM rogerdodgerTM

So you have not to pay for a samsung or htc device? cool. BTW, Android is no more completely “open”. Sorry.

      • Jroc869

Its still way more open than apple. You can put anything next tto apple and it will seem open, even a nuns legs are more open than apple.

      • http://twitter.com/rogerdodgerTM rogerdodgerTM

But Apple doesn’t want to be the paladin of openness. Google do. So no problem for Apple.

But at Google somebody it’s just a bit of hypocritical.

      • http://profiles.google.com/jellymelly829 jellymelly :D

so you’re saying all that fragmentation makes it better?
you, sir, does not have an iOS device.

      • Anonymous

You get what you pay for huh.

Fuck your free and open asshole.

    • Jon Waldner

U have an iPhone with automatic backups?
      How so? Are u jailbroken?

      • Anonymous

I think he’s referring to the automatic iTunes backups with each sync.

      • http://profiles.google.com/booboolala2000 Patrick Crumpler

Which is only “automatic” when you plug it in? What a lame ass Ferrari for an OS, and fyi, Android is the Bugatti Veyron of smartphone OS.

      • http://twitter.com/ggore Glenn Gore

Yes, I am referring to the automatic backups that occur every time I sync my iPhone 3Gs with iTunes. Everything is backed, up, contacts, calendar, apps, settings, game saves, etc, so that if my phone dies and I have to get another, all I have to do is connect it to iTunes and it will be set up EXACTLY like the old one. Is ANY stock Android phone able to do that? Short answer: NO And that is why I prefer the Apple way of doing things. I have a NexusOne that I use for work because its carrier works more in more places than AT&T does around here. I shudder to think what I would have to go through in order to bring a new Android phone up to date with software, email, contacts, applications

HTC is releasing phones with 2.1? News to me.

      According to YOUR needs.

The iphone is overrated, outdated, outgunned by Android high-end phones.

I think it’s great that some people prefer iO/S, because competition is a good thing. But Android *will* dominate, and I’m thankful because as I’ve written before, in 5 years I don’t want to walk into an appliance store and be forced to choose from one brand of appliance that is able to talk to my home automation software.

I’ll look at the iO/S product, then look down the aisle at LG products, Samsung products, etc that have Android embedded.

The future is a bit brighter for Android; so iO/S fans can continue to have the “iphone is a ferrari compared to android” arrogant attitude. I think people are past the point of considering that as truth.

      • Anonymous

        One, it’s not “iO/S,” it’s “iOS.”

Two, Android will “dominate” market share relative to the iPhone, but that’s it, because people love the one-cent phones and BOGO offers. Thanks in part to Android’s commoditization, the iPhone dominates in revenue and profit, which is good because revenue and profit are the whole point of business. It’s why Google yesterday reported a $2.3 billion dollar “net income,” not a 30% Android market share.

FYI, Apple’s last quarterly report put its iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) profit at $4 billion with 377K devices announced a day, and that was before the iPad 2.

Oh, and it’s not that the iPhone is a Ferrari compared to Android; it’s that iOS is. It’s why there isn’t a single carrier worldwide where Android sales exceed iPhone sales. It’s also why Apple makes real money while Android OEMs don’t, and why no one’s buying Android tablets.

        Cheers.

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR6HpRLyzMY Walter Sobchak

You get so insanely butthurt at every positive thing you hear about android. Did Google rape your maw and kill your paw?

      • http://profiles.google.com/booboolala2000 Patrick Crumpler

Every carrier has more Android sales than iphone sales, and that’s a fact. Otherwise how would you explain androids smartphone domination?

      • Anonymous

I hate when I hear this canard about BOGO driving Android sales. I’m sure it has helped, but it is clearly not the driving factor. One of the only BOGO offers I remember seeing is on the original Droid, just as the Droid 2 was coming or had come out. And how many one cent Android devices are sold? I know not many, when I see the most popular Android devices are devices that cost >$100.

I also find it interesting when I see iFans switch positions on topics over and over. Before iPhone became dominant, market share was never uttered and was always eschewed. After it became dominant, suddenly market share was a talking point. Now that Android is winning, the iFans are scrambling and the only thing they can offer is that Apple is making a lot of money and justifying their business practices. How does taking more of your money to be put in to a cash hoard at Apple help you, the consumer?

      • Michael Scrip

        @Patrick Crumpler

If there are 9 Android phones sitting on a shelf… and only 1 iPhone… statistically more Android phones will sell.

And that’s great for Google and their ad sales. But when you think of each Android phone manufacturer… those numbers get spread-out among all the manufacturers.

Apple sold 16,200,000 iPhones last quarter… Motorola would kill for those numbers.

      • http://twitter.com/Thorpeland Thorpeland

This article isn’t even about phone sales by manufacturers. Its about Google activations. The shear number of Android operating systems being activated/registered on their servers.

And its pretty clear why Android is spreading so fast. People like choices. Not everyone wants to have the exact same phone, with the exact same look. The mere fact iphone owners are so defensive on here is proof of how good Android is.

iphones aren’t so bad. It’s the arrogant, brain washed apple fans which annoy me. Lose the superiority complex. Your phone is in 2nd place now. ugg….

      • Michael Scrip

I love how you hate brainwashed fanboys… yet in the next breath, you say “Your phone is in 2nd place now.”

        I have a Blackberry, BTW…

      • Steve Hillshire

Funny that from your “perspective” Android is only popular because of BOGO offers and 1 cent deals. I guess that is why high end phones like the Thunderbolt @ $249 are selling so well? Leave it to you genius iBoys to reveal the truth about why Android is popular. I guess the fact that nearly every Android phone I see is a high end one has just totally been shot down by an iGenius who really knows the truth that everyone is buying 1 cent and BOGO Android phones. Who would have known….

      • Steve Hillshire

        @Michael Scrip

And Chrysler would kill for Toyota’s sales, but they seem to be quite happy where they are. Android saved Motorola’s mobility division. And I’m sure they are happy with just that for now. Nobody has to be compared to Apple’s revenue in order to make a living. They just aren’t making a filthy stinking rich living like Apple. All that revenue Apple makes can’t make or stop people from buying Android devices and making money for Motorola, HTC, LG, etc.

So really, people could say Donald Trump has more revenue than Michael Scrip and that you are just a piece of scum on the side of the street because you don’t have revenue like he does. Somehow I would think you would disagree with that.

      • Jayhammy

I have only one point I disagree with, where you state: “but Android *will* dominate.”

Um, it already does. ;-) It’s #1 worldwide, just having passed Symbian for the first time.

    • http://twitter.com/ej6100 jon

and if your on verizon with our iphone….like I am…you wouldn’t be running up to date software either.
this might be adressed in the future…who knows….but as of now…its fragmented….and I have seen software in the app store that i couldn’t install because of this issue.
Yes it might be just a small difference in the version number….but it is an issue

    • http://profiles.google.com/booboolala2000 Patrick Crumpler

Sorry, but you don’t have instant backups. You need a cable for that. Unlike android where if you are on your laptop and add an contact to gmail it is instantly added on your phone too.

How about Verizon iPhone 4 users that DON’T have the completely up-to-date software?

  • Anonymous

Google’s revenue for Android device per year is $10. Each and every Android device makes Google $10 a year. The ASP for iOS products alone is around $600. Now Add in Apps, media and “accessories”.

    Google activates 350,000 a day X 365.25 = Roughly 128 million X $10 = $1.28 Billion for Google
    Apple activates 350,000 a day X 365.25 = Roughly 128 million X $700 = $89.6 Billion for Apple

They are head to head in market share and worlds apart in revenue.

    • Anonymous

Yes, but Google is not manufacturing the hardware, so they don’t have to recoup those cost like Apple does. As far as the manufactures, if Android wasn’t making them money, I doubt we would be seeing so many devices being pushed out these days.

      • http://twitter.com/BenComicGraphic Ben Carver

        Apple manufactures?

Then why is it an LG screen, a Samsung processor, Samsung Memory, and a Texas Instruments cell radio inside it assembled in Foxconn?

I hate the “Apple manufactures their own stuff” bullshit.

an iPhone 4 is the same goddamn phone as a Samsung Galaxy S, but with a shittier antenna.

      • Jayhammy

        WOW! Love that reply!

      • Petelam

Yes, apple gets all their hardware from trees which grow in magical fields which are fed with revolutionary streams that save apple any sort of overhead what so ever in the production, manufacturing and R&D on any of their products. This is how they ensure 100% profit as you see it. Remarkable. Ingenious. Facetime!

    • KCRic

They also get money from adds and from the market just in case you forgot about those. There are tons of ways Google makes money from Android and it’s straight profit for them unlike Apple who has to deduct costs for hardware, licensing, and many more things.

      • Test

That $10 they make per phone is their estimated yearly income form ads on each phone. $10 is all they make period! Get Educated!

    • http://profiles.google.com/booboolala2000 Patrick Crumpler

Yet each pos ios device only cost apple $10 to produce. Thinking long run vs short run and you may begin to see where Google is going.

      • Test

POS devices? Don’t forget that Android would look like BB or Win Mobile if Apple didn’t reinvent mobile phones. You should stop bashing and give credit where it is due. And the iphone costs a lot more than $10 to produce. Are simple or something?

      • http://twitter.com/BenComicGraphic Ben Carver

Then how come everything from the iOS home screen, lock screen, and dialing screen look remarkably like Palm’s 2003 touchscreen phone patents?

        Goddamn kool-aid drinkers.

      • Shanghai Dan

Actually, Google could have copied HTC TouchFlo, or SPB Mobile Shell – both on WinMo well before the iPhone was ever publicly announced. But I bet they would have done a better job of copying the interface, unlike Apple’s poor knock-off…

    • Shanghai Dan

Take a look at profit margin – return on that revenue. Apple’s behind Google.

  • http://twitter.com/homescrub homescrub

Ok. Can they push Netflix to make an app now?

netflix requires hardware drm. netflix has to get the approval from the content people so basically android is at the mercy of the hardware of current non-drm’d phones and movie studios.

  • http://twitter.com/Thorpeland Thorpeland

I don’t care about sales numbers or how much each company is taking out of our pockets. But, I am extremely happy to see how Android has evolved and is really taking off now. I started using Android at version 1.0 with a Tmo G1. I liked it then, even when i was getting laughed at by all the arrogant iphone fanboys. That was over 3 years ago and I told them, Just wait. :)

Fast forward to 2011. Sure the iphone is a good device with nice hardware. Im not going to say its a bad phone. But i can only sit back and laugh as i read the iphone fan boys scrambling now to defend their beloved, over rated device against Android. At only version 2.x Android is already beating iphone at its own game. It evolves faster, hardware is getting better and more apps are now being written for it. Yes i-fans i know netflix isn’t on Android…. yet.

You’re just going to have to accept the fact. Android is here to stay and it’s going to be stealing more and more of apples market share every month from here on. But hey, look at it this way. Now that Android is king, the iphone is an underdog and its hip to have one again. lol

PS – Oh and enjoy your 3G iphones while all the carriers in the US have android phones running on 4G networks. And yes… it makes a huge difference. ;)
